5 of the Best Superhero Movie Trailers of the 21st Century

The 21st century is the Golden Age of superhero films. This is the period where our favorite childhood comic book superheroes become “real.” Thanks to the movie studios for taking the most exciting bits of the superhero flicks and transforming them into a dramatic trailer that have us all movie fans screaming for more in anticipation.

So what makes a great superhero trailer? Aside from the humor and exciting scenes, stunning visual is also a requisite to heighten the level of excitement and discussion of a movie. The success of a movie partly depends on how amazing the trailer is. It’s one of the things that entice moviegoers to watch a film.

Here are five of the best superhero movie trailer of the 21st century.

1. Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (2016)

The event (civil war) is triggered after the Avengers go on a mission in Nigeria where they emerge victorious—but with a cost. A number of innocent lives are lost due to inability of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) to control her power. This causes the government to interfere with Sokovia Accords, but not all superheroes agree to it. Stark thinks they really need to be monitored after a confrontation that made him realize that he is responsible for some lives that are lost because of his being a superhero while Steve Rogers doesn’t like being sent into war that doesn’t have something to do with what he believes in.

Each of our heroes think they are right with their decisions. The disagreement escalated when Rogers decided to protect his longtime friend Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) who is being pursued by the authorities for his alleged involvement in terrorist attack, then killed many civilians including the King of Wakanda.

Falcon, Hawkeye, Antman, and Scarlet Witch sided with Captain America while Black Widow, Black Panther, War Machine, Vision stick with Iron Man. After teasing the exciting airport brawl where Spider-Man is introduced, no wonder Captain America: Civil War is the highest-grossing superhero film today.

2. Marvel’s The Avengers (2012)

Excitement had long been awaken even before this teaser was released. Fans had been waiting for this huge movie for years, so when this trailer hit the Internet, fervor almost reached the ceiling. Huge explosions and intense action, a clip of every team member’s enlistment, fellowship, and dispute with each other is shown in the teaser.

The sweeping shot of the team at the end may be just a normal scene to casual movie fans, but to bona fide comic book fans, who had long dreamed of seeing their favorite heroes together on screen, it is everything.

3. Spider-Man (2002)

Spider-Man is Marvel’s most famous and distinguishable superhero, yet it took the company 40 years to take the wall-crawler from the pages of the comics to live-action. That’s why this trailer alone was highly anticipated.

Tobey Maguire started right in the introduction about Peter Parker, what it feels like to be in his unique situation as Spidey. The brief glimpses of him leaping and swinging into action, Mary Jane with our favorite icon, Spider-Man hanging to the flagpole at the top of a building, and who can forget the most famous kiss in the history of superhero films. Green Goblin also is the exact reflection of himself in the comics.

In this movie, Spider-Man comes alive and real for comic book fans. That’s difficult to beat.

4. Watchmen (2009)

Comic book fans love this film particularly because it doesn’t divert from its original story in the comics, every important plot is present—one of the best superhero movies ever made. The editing is superb that even the non-fans become curious.

The actors are amazing, their characters are fully developed. The action choreography is smooth and violent. Smashing Pumpkins‘ “The Beginning Is the End” is just the perfect song for the trailer of a movie with dark, depressing, yet smart and mature story. A brilliant movie, the only reason you might not like it is because it’s not your typical superhero movie—it’s too dark and not suitable for children.

5. The Dark Knight (2008)

This movie is a bit different from the other Batman films. While the other Batman movie trailer previously made focused more on Bruce Wayne, in this particular teaser, Joker’s character was also highlighted. This is probably Christopher Nolan‘s way of somehow justifying himself for choosing Health Ledger as Joker because some fans criticized his choice of Ledger for the role.

But as soon as this trailer was out, suddenly, people changed their mind. Not only Ledger was brilliant, but he was able to make the character as his own. A new Bat-mobile was also shown in this teaser. Among the most memorable scenes are Alfred’s speech to Bruce, Joker’s “Why so serious,” and the exchange between Joker and Batman with our hero’s “Then you’re going to love me” line. Two-Face was also slightly seen in the trailer.
