Horror Movie Plot Twists That Will Leave You Gaping

1. Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods

At the surface, Joss Whedon‘s Cabin in the Woods seems like your stereotypical horror flick. There’s the hormone-ridden “hot” couple, the geek, the virgin, and the stoner. Turns out, that is just what the producers want you to think.

Although the plot twist is revealed early on, the real goods are delivered in the third act. The movie moves the spotlight to a secret facility that has been assigned to appease an ancient creature. To complete this annual ritual, a group of teens are sacrificed with a special order that the virgin die last. There is a certain scene where iconic monsters are released to cause major carnage, though not a twist it, was truly a satisfying moment for horror fans.

2. Sleepaway Camp

Sleepaway Camp

The film opens with a tragic boating accident that scarred Angela for life. To help her make friends, Angela is sent away to spend the summer at a camp. She remains a recluse during her entire stay and is bullied by almost everyone. Meanwhile, an unknown killer is on the loose, and as community members fall one by one, all hands are pointed toward Ricky, Angela’s cousin.

As you might have guessed, Ricky is not the killer. In one of the most shocking horror movie plot twists of all time, it is revealed that Angela is innocent too. In fact, she died from the boating accident at the start of the film. The killer is revealed to be Peter, Angela’s brother who has been posing as his deceased sister this whole time. Psycho vibes anyone?

3. Psycho

Speaking of Psycho. There isn’t a list of shocking movie twists that didn’t mention the Hitchcock classic that started it all. Not only was the main character murdered in the first 45 minutes of the movie, but audiences are given an even more shocking realization as the film reaches the end.

When one of the characters hides in the cellar of the Bates Motel, she finds out that Mrs. Bates has been dead all this time. On cue, Norman Bates comes out of the shadows dressed in his mother’s clothes and wig, revealing that Norman has been assuming his mother’s personality when he carried out his gruesome murder spree.

4. The Others

The Others

Nicole Kidman shows off her fine acting skills in The Others. In the film, Kidman plays Grace, a mother of two who hides in her English mansion after her children develop a rare photosensitive disease. When three servants come to work for them, Grace and her family notice a number of paranormal occurrences happening throughout the house.

Grace discovers a group of intruders carrying out a séance in her own home. So just who were they trying to communicate with? It is revealed that the real ghosts are Grace, her family, and the three servants and that they have been responsible for the haunting this whole time! The “intruders” are actually the new occupants of the house. Grace regains her memory at that moment, realizing she lost her mind, murdered her children, and killed herself in the process.

5. The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense

Director M. Knight Shyamalan is best known for his movie plot twists. He recently revamped his signature directorial style with the 2017 film Split. While it was Split that brought him back to the Hollywood circuit, it was the 1999 film The Sixth Sense that put him on the map. The Sixth Sense gave birth to the iconic line “I see dead people.” But don’t let that fool you into thinking that it’s the biggest part of the movie as the most shocking part of the film comes at the very end.

Little Cole sees dead people, including the main character Dr. Malcolm Crowe (played by Bruce Willis). After the big reveal, a lot of audiences had to rewatch the film to spot clues that point out to Crowe’s physical nonexistence. It truly is one of the most shocking horror movie plot twists of all time!
